Moving House Kitchen: The Most Complex Room to Pack
Moving House Kitchen: The Most Complex Room to Pack
The kitchen is typically the most challenging room to pack when moving house. Between fragile dishes, sharp utensils, and irregularly shaped appliances, organizing this space requires more time and care than any other room in your home.
Kitchen Packing Strategy
Week Before the Move
- Use up perishables from the refrigerator and freezer
- Pack seasonal or specialty cookware you’ll need least
- Collect and flatten cardboard boxes
3-4 Days Before
- Pack everyday dishes, glasses, and mugs
- Wrap and pack smaller appliances
- Pack non-essential cookware and utensils
1-2 Days Before
- Pack remaining everyday items
- Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer
- Pack a “first week” box with essentials
Protecting Fragile Items
Dishes: Wrap individually in packing paper, stack vertically in boxes with dividers Glassware: Wrap in bubble wrap, fill empty spaces with packing paper Pots and Pans: Stack with paper between each, wrap handles Knives: Wrap blades in cardboard or thick paper, store in knife blocks or sheaths Stemware: Pack in tall, narrow boxes with plenty of cushioning
Appliance Preparation
- Clean and dry all appliances before packing
- Pack manuals in a labeled envelope attached to the appliance
- Take photos of wire connections for reference
- Use original boxes when available
